1980- Harris v. McRae

Medicaid program was established by Congress in 1965, which was to assist states who reimbursed certain people for their medical treatments. The “Hyde Amendment” was then passed in 1976, which restricted federal funding on abortion costs. Within this case, the plaintiff, Cora McRae, decided to challenge the Hyde Amendment because she was a pregnant Medicaid recipient. The ultimate ruling was not in favor of McRae and basically said that financial mobility does not affect the access of abortion. The court states that a woman's freedom of choice does not constitute entitlement to take advantage of the government’s financial resources. (“Harris”).
